Everyone has a story when it comes to natural hair but mine is probably not the fun one you’d love to hear. I’d share anyway.
Sometime in 2012, I was tired of relaxers and decided to go natural for the first time. I managed my hair without a relaxer for about 6 months, my hair was mostly in braids. In the 7th month, I was frustrated and called my hair stylist. First, I asked whether she knew a natural hair stylist and she said “Oh yes there’s someone right here in my salon”. I got excited hoping to set up an appointment sometime to get a professional look of my kinks.
Well, I couldn’t make up my mind more than a week after the call but I had already started feeling I will need to schedule an appointment to get a relaxer. I could neither comb nor style my hair – that was frustrating enough and “sad” right?.
Later that week, I finally called for an appointment but you should guess the obvious reason, I was going for a relaxer instead. When I reached the salon, the natural hair stylist I was supposed to go and see earlier came by (I think they talked about me – the indecisive lady, whatever!). However, she encouraged me to try the natural hair journey again. This woman’s natural hair was beautiful and “perfect” and “whoa” I was inspired. She also offered to give me any tips I will need.
Fast forward, for those wondering, I’ve been “informally” natural since 2012. I still had both natural and relaxed hair growing together. My girlfriend, already natural at the time, asked me not to cut the relaxed hair off entirely. However, one wash day, I couldn’t resist my “funny-looking” relaxed hair sitting on top on the natural growth so I cut half-off and asked her to cut the remaining, that was the only way I could convince her to, haha! This was somewhere in 2013, I’m sure you are smart enough to do the math.
My hair was usually in braids with no breaks, I practically had no time to deal with the so-called short hair. So I’d say that helped under the circumstances.
Here I am… Hair all natural and feeling proud!!!
