Hair Basics – Wash Day

Today, I wanted to address some of the questions I have been getting regarding wash day – hopefully you find them useful for your journey…

Is understanding my hair type necessary?

Yes, you need to know what your hair likes and dislikes. I haven’t done any porosity test on my hair, however, I went to the salon to have someone with more knowledge take care of my hair.

It helps if you can afford at least once every six months. And get a trim when you visit.

Is prepoo necessary?

Yes, but you need to pay attention to your hair first. I prepoo usually overnight, whenever I plan to use regular shampoo on my hair.

Pre-poo is when you prepare the hair before washing with shampoo or co-washing.

How I pre-poo

  1. Section-off hair
  2. Spritz water on each section to make it workable
  3. Apply coconut oil and olive oil and finger detangle
  4. Then apply products aloe vera pulp from fresh aloe (you can use aloe vera juice as well, which I do when I run out of the plant)

Do I Shampoo or co-wash?

Shampoo when your hair is dirty and feeling dry. Eg. I use shampoo every two weeks, or when my hair is out from braids or other protective styles. You’ll need to use shampoo to wash your hair more frequently if you use gel, edge control, etc on daily basis. Otherwise you will likely have too much residue on your scalp which does not help you hair to grow.

Co-wash when your hair is not too dirty or doesn’t feel like it but needs some moisture and love.

Where should you shampoo? Under shower or in sink?

I like to shampoo under the shower so I can control my hair in sections. Plus, you don’t want the mess in your kitchen or bathroom sink areas

On few occasions, I wash in the sink especially after a long protective style(braids, weave-on, etc). Reason: I need more time to deep condition my dry messy hair.

So basically, it also depends on how much time you have and what you’d want to achieve on wash day.

Do I need to wash my hair in sections?

I usually shampoo my hair in sections but co-wash  my entire hair most times (lazy day) or split into two (at least). Sections are manageable and also helps you pay more attention to you hair.
