This is when you apply certain additional products to your hair for various reasons. Normally for natural hair, treatments are done for hair growth, length retention, to increase moisture in hair, strengthen hair, for thicker hair and/or to make hair manageable. Whenever you decide to try any hair treatment pleassee…have a goal. Unfortunately, there is so much information out there and people are always vulnerable to trying things which could potentially cause hair damage and sometimes breakage, “tread” cautiously.
Deep Conditioning
This is the most common hair treatment in salon and homes. It is simply applying a moisturizing, protein-based or conditioning product, DIY mixture to restore, strengthen and or repair the hair. Deep conditioning is recommended whenever you use a shampoo or co-wash. (I don’t deep condition when I co-wash – that’s my preference) It must be followed by your “rinse out” conditioner to prevent dryness and breakage.
Application Process
The product should be applied only to the hair (as much as possible) from roots to ends and not the scalp, massage gently into the hair for full results. Usually, after application cover hair with shower cap for a couple of minutes if you have time or sit under a hooded dryer. This helps the product to work thoroughly on the hair. From my experience, if you want to leave the deep conditioning product for 30 minutes or more its best to apply some oil – (I use coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil) to get best results. With this process, I also feel I’m getting an oil treatment as well.
Recently, I don’t have enough time to sit under a hooded dryer or wait for 30minutes every wash day. I only do this after a prolonged protective hair style like braids, but when I see the transformation on my hair.
My Routine
- Pre-poo (hair in sections) – leave hair in shower cap overnight or for about an hour
- Apply shampoo in the shower and rinse out completely
- Apply deep-conditioner to sectioned hair in the shower section by section rinse hair thoroughly
- Apply conditioner and rinse out
- Ready to apply leave-in and style
