Kids Hair Care Basics

Dealing with baby/kids curly and kinky hair can be very frustrating for parents. I can tell you many moms especially would wake up one day hoping they never have to deal with their child’s hair but reality sets in. I’m not saying they don’t like the curls, dealing with it is “something” else. Some resort to relaxers and texturizers, etc., but those only have short term relief and may cause long term damage. Your worst nightmare would be “leaving it alone”, so don’t even go there, please. DON’T GIVE UP, IT GETS BETTER BY DAY!!! It’s taken me more than 2 years to understand and easily deal with my almost 3-year old’s hair, so even though I’m still newbie in this, I can share few tips.

Age matters

These are recommended for children 3 months and up, including baby boys too. haha! Trust me when I say you’ll learn the tricks as you go…

  1. Know and understand the hair texture of your baby/child
  2. Get a hair care routine (start early), it works. It also helps them to know there’s something called “hair do”, until they can handle on their own. Typically, they will adapt as they grow, we are humans, aren’t we?
  3. Invest in a good “baby and/or kid friendly shampoo and conditioner (“good” means a product that works)
  4. Get them good leave-in conditioner
  5. A moisturizer and a moisturizing routine (for regular use)
  6. Get good cream, maybe a couple to try in the beginning – check my other posts for some recommendations
  7. Some oils are always good to have handy

Wash day

  • Establish a wash day routine for the baby/child.

For babies

  • I apply some coconut, olive or avocado oil before you wash with shampoo (depends on what I have available).

I stop washing my baby’s hair daily as soon as they are about 2months old. To start a weekly wash. Then I switch to bi-weekly when they are 3months old, back to weekly when 4months and up.

Toddler – Routine

  1. Section hair
  2. Spritz water, finger detangle, apply coconut/olive oil then Aloe Vera (if I have it)
  3. Cover with shower cap and let’s them “jog”/run around the house for 15-20 minutes before I shampoo

  1. This is best place to get hair care information . Every information is right on point. I prioritize and read every post and follow the instructions. Wash days are fun days for my baby.
